Suspicious phone call

I once thought I’ll never get phone calls such as this.

Some random person called me, with a phone number that was suspicious to begin with. +855111. Seems to be calling from one of those nifty tele-marketing software, where they can call out via the computer. Think SKYPE. Minus the sophistication.

So this auntie sounding caller said she was calling from Hong Kong and represents a phone manufacturing company doing a survey. The supposed phone company intends to release a new 3G PDA phone in Singapore and would like to find out what kind of price range would be reasonable.  And she went on to ask me the questions.

My immediate reaction was to go on Red Scammer Alert.  Very un-gemini trait. Anyway, I cut her off and threw a bucket of questions at her. What company do you represent? Where did you get my mobile number? What company are you calling from? What is the purpose of this survey? What will be done to the survey questions?

The more I asked, the more I suspected. She actually works for Asia Television Ltd but represents this obscure company called 卓越科技公司. This company apparently manufactures mobile phones. Yet when I whip out my trusty Google and searched for the company? Nada. None of the companies that are listed in the search makes mobile phones. I see refractometers, beauty/massage/health products, military defense products… But NO MOBILE PHONES. Ah-ha!

And when I decided okay, I’ll let her ask the questions. She asked for my FULL NAME, which I refused. And when I did, she said she is unable to continue with the survey. Ah-ha! Another suspicious point. Legit surveys are a bit more lax about the name requirements. The important point is the results, not the contacts. Unless, of course, their aim is not the results, BUT the contacts. Which I’m obviously not going to give them that.

So that’s it. End of the survey! Should have given her some random name I pluck from the air.

Seriously. They are horribly unfortunate in that they meet ME. Someone who has done research before. And someone who actually KNOWS how a company works. Manufacturing companies DO NOT make such  marketing surveys. If they manufacture phones for other companies, all the more they should not be the ones doing such calls. And come on.. 3G PDAs? What’s the technology in that?? *rolleyes*

Plus, she spoke to me in MANDARIN. If you are calling Singapore, you should NOT be speaking in Mandarin.

Plus she sounds more Mainland Chinese than a Hong Kong resident.

Pfft.

Fairfax Business Media…

has an almost 100% turnover in the editorial department since I left.

Can’t say I’m shocked. Well, I am.. by how long a certain tall blond man can possibly be entrenched in his position for so long. Then again, since everyone wipes his ass for him when he shits, why not? He should be able to last as long as he has automated toilet rolls at his beck and call.

The days before him might not have been rosy, but it was definitely more harmonious.
It might not have been awesome, but there was more laughter & more fun.
There might have been grumblings, but we were at least content.

I’m impressed that the sales staff are still there.
I’m amazed that the research & events department have not died off.
I’m upset that people would rather stay put and grumble than do something about it.

BUT

I’m just glad I’m no longer there.
But at some place where I’m still using Office 2000.
And has a remote IT helpdesk.
With me receiving internal phone calls from people I don’t know asking me to do things I don’t know how to.
All in all, Oracle ain’t that bad a place after all.
Everything’s relative.

我看到Yoshiki組S.K.I.N的消息只不過怨恨我沒錢去L.A.

Thunderbird vs Outlook 2003

Although I’m not a heavy email user, I have my little preferences and quirks that I find it’s important to me in an email client. One of which being obviously, calender. I may not be super busy but I tend to forget things, and I do have calls and meetings to go to, as well as notes of events happening.

Having used Outlook 2003 in Fairfax and Thunderbird in Oracle (simply because they stupidly still use Outlook 2000!) I have to concede that Outlook 2003 simply trumps the lot.

Though I HAVE to add that Outlook 2007 wins totally, in terms of function. But in terms of love, my heart is still with Outlook2003. Somehow.

Why? Main 2 reasons.

1) Vertical 3-panel display
I can go on about the benefits of 3 vertical panel display. It’ s so much easier to read and you get more information at a glance. The older versions of Outlook, as well as Thunderbird, still uses the split-panel for the email list & preview. It cuts off alot of the rows of emails in the folders and make manual eyeball searches much much slower. Also, reading long emails on half-screen is seriously a pain in the ass. Especially for someone like me who hates to spend too much time on one thing. Having to scroll and scroll AND scroll just to finish reading the email, when the same email can be read almost immediately in Outlook2003, pisses me to no end.

2) Calender
One thing that is sorely missing in the Thunderbird application is calender integration. Rather, I should say good calender integration. I want to be able to add a meeting/conference call/web conference/event etc to my calender immediately without any hiccups. I want to be able to send a meeting note to everyone, internal & external and be able to save it to my calender immediately and without fuss. And Thunderbird doesn’t seem to be doing and upgrades to their calender services. Or lack of it.

Therefore, even though I’m very unwilling, I’m switching back to Outlook 2000.

I still can’t believe Oracle uses Office 2000. Time to do an UPGRADE! Gee! It’s Office 2007 already people! Keep up with the times! Don’t be stingy! Give Office 2003 to everyone, and not just selected personnel. Pooey. Biasness against contractors.

I get so jealous whenever I see the girl next to me using Office 2003. Pooey!

Office 2000 is disgusting!
